Tea break at the Factory hosted by
Chi Chi Bunichi and missfit productions
Sunday 18th May 2008 at 8pm.
Ladino folksong meets contemporary choreography in a nomadic journey through Sarajevo to Jerusalem; Dalston via Famagusta. Unfurled in a domestic urban gathering, Chi Chi Bunichi is an intimate dance with harmonium, ukulele, recorded and live voices celebrating stories of diaspora, displacement, dollars and desire. Come fall into the arms of real people...sip tea in your tea break...remember your grandmother...
"It's hard not to feel upbeat and moved by this evening of Ladino song and specially created dance."
The Londonist
With by Daphna Attias, Robert Cook, Yaniv Fridel, Ayse Tashkiran, Konstantinos Thomaidis, Jenny Hayton, Mark Jones and hosted for one evening only by Missfit Productions
Membership £5 (on the door), please contact below to be added to the list of guests.
Ladino is a dying language surviving in song form - romansas and cantigas. This Judea-Hispanic language journeyed from Spain to the Ottoman Empire, to the Balkans and Morocco – a nomadic oral form that has survived for 500 years.
Chi Chi Bunichi has taken its inspiration from this itinerant form of song; and in particular two recordings of the same song unearthed by Daphna Attias. One is of her grandmother singing in her kitchen, and the second, is of her great grandfather recorded 40 years earlier.
Chi Chi Bunichi is a nomadic event that has performed for Radio Gagarin at the Notting Hill Arts Club, at the People Show Studios, Oxford House and is delighted to be hosted at the Factory in Tottenham.
